Martin Booth

Martin Booth (7 settembre 1944 - 12 febbraio 2004) è stato un romanziere e poeta britannico. Ha anche lavorato come insegnante e sceneggiatore, ed è stato il fondatore della Sceptre Press.

Primi anni di vita

Booth è nato nel Lancashire, ma è stato cresciuto principalmente ad Hong Kong, dove ha frequentato la Kowloon Junior School, la Peak School, poi la King George V School, e se ne andò nel 1964.

carriera

In primo luogo ha fatto il suo nome come poeta e come editore, producendo volumi eleganti da poeti britannici e americani, tra cui sottili volumi di lavoro di Sylvia Plath e Ted Hughes. I suoi libri di versi includono The Knotting Sequence (1977), chiamato per il villaggio in cui Booth viveva in quel momento. Il libro presenta una serie di testi in cui cerca legami tra il presente e il passato sassone e l'uomo chiamato Knot che ha dato il suo nome al villaggio. Booth ha anche accumulato una biblioteca di versi contemporanei, che gli ha permesso di produrre antologie e conferenze.

Alla fine degli anni '70 Booth si dedicò principalmente alla scrittura di fiction. Il suo primo romanzo di successo, Hiroshima Joe, è stato pubblicato nel 1985. Il libro si basa su ciò che ha sentito da un uomo che ha incontrato da ragazzo a Hong Kong e contiene brani ambientati in quella città durante la seconda guerra mondiale.

Booth era un veterano viaggiatore che conservava l'entusiasmo per il volo, espresso anche nelle sue poesie, come "Kent Says" e In Killing the Moscs. Il suo interesse per l'osservazione e lo studio della fauna selvatica ha portato a un libro su Jim Corbett, un cacciatore di grossi giochi ed esperto di tigri mangia-uomini.

Molte delle opere di Booth erano legate al passato imperiale britannico in Cina, Hong Kong e Asia centrale. Booth amava anche gli Stati Uniti, dove aveva molti amici poeti e l'Italia, che compare in molte delle sue poesie successive e nel suo romanzo A Very Private Gentleman (1990). Questi interessi formano un filo attraverso i suoi romanzi successivi, libri di viaggio e biografie.

Il romanzo di Booth, Industry of Souls, è stato selezionato per il Booker Prize del 1998.

Booth morì di cancro nel Devon nel 2004, poco dopo aver completato Gweilo, un ricordo della sua infanzia a Hong Kong scritto per i suoi figli.

Il film del 2010 The American , interpretato da George Clooney, era basato sul suo romanzo A Very Private Gentleman.
