John Patrick (drammaturgo)
John Patrick (17 maggio 1905 - 7 novembre 1995) è stato un drammaturgo e sceneggiatore americano.
Biografia
È nato John Patrick Goggin a Louisville, nel Kentucky. I suoi genitori lo abbandonarono presto e trascorse una giovinezza delinquente in affidamento e collegi. All'età di 19 anni, ottenne un lavoro come presentatore alla KPO Radio di San Francisco, in California, sposando Mildred Legaye nel 1925. Scrisse oltre 1.000 sceneggiature per il programma radiofonico Cecil e Sally (originariamente intitolato The Funniest Things ), trasmesso tra il 1928 e 1933. Gli unici attori dello spettacolo erano Patrick ed Helen Troy. Nel 1937, Patrick scrisse adattamenti per la serie Streamlined Shakespeare della NBC, interpretata da Helen Hayes.
Prodotto con un budget limitato, il suo primo spettacolo teatrale, Hell Freezes Over , diretto da Joshua Logan, ebbe una breve corsa a Broadway nel 1935. Tuttavia, il credito gli aprì le porte come sceneggiatore di Hollywood.
Nel 1942, una seconda commedia, The Willow and I , fu prodotta con Martha Scott e Gregory Peck nei ruoli da protagonista. Prima della sua prima notte, Patrick si era offerto volontario per l'American Field Service fornendo servizi medici a supporto dell'esercito britannico che combatteva la seconda guerra mondiale. Ha servito con l'ottava armata di Montgomery in Egitto e successivamente ha visto l'azione in India e in Birmania dove sono state germinate le idee per la sua prossima opera teatrale The Hasty Heart . Le sue prossime due opere teatrali, The Curious Savage (1950) e Lo and Behold (1951), andarono meno bene, ma fu il suo adattamento teatrale del 1953 del romanzo di Vern J. Sneider The Teahouse of the August Moon che segnò l'apice della sua fama, vincendo sia il Premio Pulitzer che il Tony Award per il teatro. Ha adattato la commedia per lo schermo nel 1956 e per il palcoscenico musicale con il titolo Lovely Ladies, Kind Gentlemen nel 1970. Nel 1954, ha scritto la sceneggiatura del film Three Coins in the Fountain e nel 1955, ha adattato il libro autobiografico A Many-Splendoured Thing di Han Suyin, per il film Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing .
La sua opera successiva, Good as Gold (1957), fu meno ben accolta e la maggior parte del resto della sua carriera fu dedicata a una serie di incarichi di sceneggiatore di successo. Dopo il suo successo con The Hasty Heart , Patrick acquistò la tenuta di Hasty Hill a Suffern, New York, di 65 acri (26 ettari). Successivamente si trasferisce a Saint Thomas, Isole Vergini americane.
Il 7 novembre 1995, il drammaturgo di 90 anni è stato trovato morto nella sua stanza con un sacchetto di plastica sopra la testa. La sua morte è stata giudicata un suicidio.
